Model 1: Laser

My first model is the laser which is a pretty straight foreword object. Firstly I started off with a torus ring and used the array feature to create as many as I needed. This helps keep the file size to a minimum and also saves time as I would have to copy the same ring and position each one. The array feature also helps keep the objects the same width and depth apart keeping its consistency.

Next a thin cylinder which is placed in the centre of the torus rings, forming the main beam in the laser. Using the picture of the Manhattan skyline and placing it on the cylinder gives a shiny effect and brings the beam to life.

Next another cylinder is needed to form a metal harness for the laser. Using an image of a shiny metal and adding it to the cylinder makes the metal object look more realistic.

This cylinder can then be duplicated twice, the first to be added to the top part of the laser, then extended ready to form the junction between the laser and the ceiling.

The second copy will form the base of the laser where the beam will shoot. Here the bottom part of the cylinder has been converted to poly allowing the edges to be extruded down to a single point.

The last step is finding a good colour for the rings; it needs to have a glass effect yet with a solid blue colour. In the material editor under maps I selected reflection and refraction and gave each of them the raytrace map. This gave a good shiny chrome effect which is exactly what I am looking for.

overall this object was quite straight forward to model, it just required a lot of thought and testing to find exactly the right colours and effects I was looking for.

Goldfinger mood board and Bibliography

This is the james bond that i decided to model. Like man with the golden gun this film has a lot of aspects that make the film so appealing, such as the aston martin and oddjob. I have chosen to model the aston martin, the laser where james bond is tied to a table and a person. This is so i can animate oddjob throwing the hat, you would never really think that a hat could be a deadly weapon.

Man with the golden gun mood board and Bibliography

The man with the golden gun was the second james bond i considered a trailer for. The film just has a number of aspects that appeal to a great number and that people always remember, such as the car scene flying over the river. The three models i would have chosen would have to be the golden gun itself, the car and a person. The person would then be replicated so i could cover the fighting school scene.

You only live twice mood board and Bibliography

This was my first idea for a james bond trailer, everyone has to love the villian with the cat. I also love the two vechiles in this particular james bond film with all the gadgets in both. The one man helcopter and a classic james bond car. The three models i would have chosen would be the cat, the car and the helicopter.

Creating Leaves and Reflection Tools

Creating a leaf is reasonably straight foreward using 3d max, the hard part is using adobe photoshop beforehand. serveral layers need to be created one of which is filled with black, this is the outside of the leaf, and white, inside of the leaf. The orginal leaf image is then imported into 3d max so that the colour and shape can be put into the editor. Once a plane is drawn the orginal image can be placed on the planealong with the edited photoshop versions which mask out the whiteness of the images.
The image can then be shaped to look like a proper leaf. Once one leaf has been created it is very easy to make more.

Another tool that will be very useful is the reflecton tool. First you just pick a shape, in this case a torus knot and open the editor once the shape has been created. Next give the shape a dark colour and then choose the map option.
Here to can give the shape a map image, similar to the leaf, a picture of manhattan skyline was chosen, so when the image is rendered it has a shiny look to it.
This will be a very useful technique whe it comes to creating the james bond car, as most cars have a shiny glossy look to them.

Goldfinger

I have decided to make a trailer for the Goldfinger james bond film, as it includes a lot of objects that i would love to try and model and animate.
Classic poster of the james bond film and i would love to try and model the aston martin.

Here are some blueprints of the aston martin that will help me draw it using the same technique as the tank.

The classic scene involving the laser and the back and forth action between james bond and goldfinger is probably one of the most memorable scenes of the film.

The final object i would like to model is oddjobs hat. In the james bond films we have seen all sorts of strnage weapons but you would never think that a hat could be used to kill someone.

These are the key elements that will play some part in the final trailer.

3D Studio Max Advanced Techniques

Boolean
The boolean technique can be rather difficult to use and can take a lot of time to get it right. Basically you create two shapes and then place one inside the other, select one of the shapes and then go to compound objects and select boolean. you can the select the other shape and then remove parts of the current shape. This leaves you with whatever you have left.
This was made up of a sphere and a rectangle, the rectangle has been removed and left with the sphere. This is quite a good shape for a wheel so this may be of some use in future work.

Array
The array technique can also be quite fiddly and diffiucult to use. The user can create one object then multiple it many times. It can then be moved evenly apart to create all sorts of things like fences and stairs. This technique is very useful for objects like stairs because the same object has been multiplied and is evenly apart from one another, this saves the user having to draw each stair by hand.

Here a simple cylinder was created and then multiplied many times and moved around to form a stair case. This saves memory since only one object has been created in the first place.

Lathe
The Lathe techinque is a very useful one as the user can draw whatever the want using the line tool. The point of origin then needs to be placed and the lathe tool will then make the object 3D.
In this example a lance has been created, the top right hand corner box is where the object was first drawn, then the point of origin was placed to one side of it. this then replicated it like a cylinder moving around the object to be left with a 3D version of the drawn object.

Lofting
The lofting technique is similar to the lathe technique as it also starts with the user drawing a shape using the line tool. When the loft tool is used the hole shape becomes like a 3D cylinder.
Here a coat hanger or the number two was freely drawing in the top right hand corner box, the shape was then lofted to make the shape 3D.

Tank
This is quite an advanced technique, as it involves using images to create shapes, in this instance a tank. First a plane is put in which will hold the image, its usually best if the size is entered first in which case the size of the image will need to be known(then divided by 10). The map editor will allow you to place the image on the plane, you can make it double sided so that you can move the image around on the plane with ease.
Another plane can be put in so that you can have a side view and a top view of the object you are modelling.

Here the basics of a tank has been made with the use of blueprints of tank. This will be useful in the future especially when it comes to making the james bond car.

James bond ideas

Goldfinger: as previously stated a few ideas have already come to light including the aston martin and the scene involving james bond and goldfinger. another villian from the same movie that is quite well known is oddjob, the man that kills people with his hat. together these three key elements could make an excellent movie trailer.
you only live twice: This james bond film also contains a few key elments that people will always remember such as james bond being killed off right at the begining of the film, only to find out it was a plan all along. James bond learning to become a ninja is also quite a memorable moment, but the most memorable moment for me is the classic bond villian with the cat.
