3d Studio Max Basics


This screenshot shows how some of the basic shape tools available can be put together to create a castle. I decided to go for a court yard type look and placed a tree in one corner. The castle is made up of rectangles (walls), various doors and windows along with cones and cylinders. The other view points show how close together the objects are to one another.



The snowman proved to be a little more complex overall apart from the shapes used to create his body, head, eyes and nose. The hat is two combined cylinders one placed onto of the other. This was created using the group feature which forms the two objects together. The scarf is the torus shape which was a little more complex to handle, it is basically a ring, allowing you to choose the width and depth of it. The snowman is ontop of another cyclinder coloured white to indicate settled snow. The snow itself is a particule system feature within studio max. An environment feature made the snowman look more like a snowman  when the image was rendered.


The fruit bowl was even more complex than the snowman. meshsmooth allowed an object to look a lot smoother, basically smoothing the edges and vertices. an apple was relativly easy to create as it was just a simple sphere that had been converted to poly. This made it much easier to choose a point and edit each part individually. A stalk made the apple look even more realistic, simply a cone turned upside down and bent a little to one side. The bowl, also a sphere was also quite easy to create, the same techiques were applied and the top of the sphere could be pushed down into itself to create an even bowl. The banana was the main problem especially when it came to bending it and the edges and vertices had trouble rotating correctly.
